When I work with someone, we focus on firstly figuring out the contributors to why you’re feeling the way you’re feeling by functional lab work, and from there, we customize modifiable factors such as Diet, Rest, Exercise, Stress Management and Supplements. This then begins re-setting biochemistry and neurochemistry.
A large body of research now suggests that depression is associated with a low-grade, chronic inflammatory response and is accompanied by increased oxidative stress.
We are starting to understand that:
- anxiety
- brain fog
- chronic fatigue
- depression
- exhaustion
- fibromyalgia
- and other chronic mental and emotional conditions
are all symptoms of underlying problems within the body’s various systems.
No matter what you think about the value of pharmaceuticals, none of them claim to heal those underlying problems! As a functional health coach since 2016, I’ve been blown away by the “impossible” situations, conditions, diagnoses that I’ve seen defy traditional prognoses, once you apply the systems-based framework of Functional Nutrition. I am not saying this is for everyone, but wouldn’t you agree, that beginning with lifestyle modifications is DEFINITELY a better starting point than being overly-medicated and all the side-effects that entails?
If you’re ready to take things a step further, you can begin looking into the INTERNAL Stressors like gut pathogens, food sensitivities, as well as the EXTERNAL Stressors, like environmental toxins like Mold or Heavy Metals, or a Lack of Sunlight. Believe it or not, these all contribute to the way the body’s various systems and organs are functioning – or malfunctioning, as the case may be.
What I’m saying is that you could actually find out WHY you’re feeling the way you’re feeling, rather than just accepting it and being stuck on a lifetime supply of pharmaceuticals.
I can tell you the story of Pam who was depressed for years, short of breath, in pain, and also about 40 lbs overweight. When we ran her labs, we found mold, poor detoxification pathways, overgrowth of some unfriendly gut bugs, and not enough good bacteria. Within the first week of modifying her diet, she began shedding weight, and her inflammation and pain began decreasing. Her shortness of breath went away, and in a month her depression lifted. Why? We weren’t treating her depression, or her weight gain or her shortness of breath. We simply began correcting the imbalances that we found from the labs that we ran, and that meant we began giving her body what it needed, and it began to correct itself.
I have many more stories just like this, and it’s why I do what I do. These transformations are so inspirational, but it’s not a miracle… it’s literally as simple as following a system, that puts the power back into YOUR hands, so you can ditch the disempowering label of an illness, and learn to create the right conditions for your body, so your brain can do what it is designed to do.
